Orthotics

Foot problems affect one in four adults and can have a big impact on daily life. One common treatment option is a special device known as an orthotic. Some are worn in the shoes while others are ankle braces or a customized type.

Orthotics provide support for the feet and ankles, prevent and address deformities of the foot, and help the foot and ankle function better. In some cases, they may also aid in delaying or even preventing problems that could require more invasive treatment.

Some foot and ankle conditions that may be helped by orthotics include bunions, corns and calluses, feet with high arches or those that are flat, plantar fasciitis, hammertoes, and more.

Types

Orthotics is a broad category that includes everything from small cushions like foot pads and heel liners to arch supports.

Insoles are inserts that go inside shoes and provide extra support. They can be soft or firm and are made from different kinds of materials.

Ankle braces can help with several foot and ankle issues including tendonitis.

Over-the-counter vs. customized orthotics

Orthotics typically come in two types: over-the-counter which can be purchased off the shelf at grocery or drug stores or online and customized which are created by a foot and ankle specialist.

Over-the-counter versions may work for people with mild symptoms but ongoing or severe issues should be properly diagnosed and treated with a more personalized option.

Custom orthotics also provide a higher level of cushioning and support for the feet and last much longer.

Kinds of customized orthotics

Custom orthotics are designed specifically for each individual and tend to be more effective. A few types are available.

Rigid ‘functional’ orthotics

Created from stiff materials like plastic and carbon fiber, these orthotics slip inside the shoes. They help direct how the foot moves and reduce pressure on the muscles and soft tissues which results in less discomfort and pain.

Soft ‘accommodative’ orthotics

These larger, padded orthotics are made from softer, more flexible materials that allow them to mold to the foot's shape. They are worn with special shoes and provide cushioning and support for conditions like foot ulcers related to diabetes.

If you're suffering from foot pain, it's important to get a proper diagnosis to reduce discomfort and prevent a bigger issue from developing. We can help.
